Clinical Focus
Dr. Donahue treats the full breadth of pediatric eye conditions, including strabismus (in both children and adults), amblyopia, nasolacrimal duct obstruction, retinopathy of prematurity, pediatric cataracts, congenital eye conditions, and neuro-ophthalmic disorders. His procedural range includes strabismus surgery, patching therapy for amblyopia, tear-duct probing and intubation, pediatric cataract surgery, and contact lens fitting for aphakia. Within the practice, he is the lead provider for children with developmental delays, prematurity-related eye conditions, and complex systemic disease, and he co-manages myopia control with the Rhode Island Eye Institute optometry team.
Pediatric ophthalmology is one of the most rewarding parts of medicine because the changes you make early can shape a child's vision and development for the rest of their life. Whether I'm correcting strabismus, treating amblyopia, or working with a child who has more complex medical needs, my goal is the same: to give every kid the clearest possible vision and to make their family feel like real partners in the process. Children's eyes are still growing, and that means every visit is an opportunity to catch something early and change the trajectory.

Scientist, Educator & Explorer
Dr. Donahue's path to pediatric ophthalmology is as distinctive as his credentials. Before medicine, he pursued a U.S. Department of Energy–sponsored Nuclear Chemistry Fellowship at San Jose State University and spent a formative summer as an exchange student in Germany, experiences that reflect a lifelong curiosity extending far beyond the clinic. As Chairman of the 5th Annual National Conference for MD/PhD Students in Aspen, he demonstrated early leadership in academic medicine. Today, he practices at both Rhode Island Eye Institute in Providence and The Center for Eye Health in Fall River, MA, ensuring that children and families across Southern New England have access to one of the region's most uniquely trained pediatric eye specialists.
